To celebrate the Munich Beer Festival, we brewed a beer in the style of the German Festbier, which is drunk at the famous Oktoberfest festival. We chose German Hallertauer Mittelfrüh hops, which bring a pleasant herbal aroma, and German malts then add a nice grainy and smooth base.

Munich’s Oktoberfest is a legend that began in 1810. The idea that any of today’s beer festivals will ever celebrate their bicentennial is very strange, but Oktoberfest proves it’s possible. Historically, several beers have been on tap at Oktoberfest, but in the 1970s, the Paulaner brewery came up with a revolution. It ditched the thick, semi-dark Marzen and replaced it with a pale German lager. The motivation was, of course, profit. People drink more light beer and the rest of the breweries involved in the festival quickly adopted this motivation. Thus, in the 1990s, complete homogenisation was completed and today you can only have Festbier, a pale lager, at Oktoberfest. Our interpretation is based on Pilsner malt with a touch of Bavarian and Vienna malt. We have accentuated the flavour by using the leading German hop Hallertau Mittelfrucht, which imparts subtle floral herbal notes and creates a high drinkability.
