Halloween means one thing – pumpkin beer. We brew our pumpkin allargely from hokkaido pumpkins, which we process and roast ourselves for a really intense flavor. The beer is then flavored with spices typical of pumpkin pie.

The history of pumpkin beers goes way back before the American Revolution, when malting immigrants often replaced much of the scarce grain with local sources of sugar, like pumpkins. But the addition of spices typical of pumpkin pies is a more modern development that we associate with the American craft beer revolution. Pumpkin is a very rewarding ingredient, but one that requires care and preparation on the part of the brewer. In fact, the pumpkin itself doesn’t carry as much flavour when fresh. That’s why we roast the pumpkin and brown it thoroughly before pouring it into the hot phase of the brew. The result is then really noticeable and the pumpkin flavour is then dominant. The spices we used in our pumpkin ale are cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger.
