German rauchbiers from the city of Bamberg are a unique world heritage. When the invention of drum roasting of malt appeared in the 19th century, i.e. roasting without direct heating, the world quickly learned and traditional malts that were smoked over open wood-fueled fire began to disappear quickly. This happened practically everywhere, well, everywhere except Bamberg, where several breweries made it their goal to preserve this tradition and thus this bastion of traditional German smoked lager was created, and still stands today.
Bamberg is definitely worth a visit, mainly thanks to the two most traditional breweries – Bauerei Schlenkerla and Brauerei Spezial. These two breweries produce the most smoky rauchbiers that really show flavors similar to smoked bacon. This made them legendary witihn the beer world, and with our “Bamberg 13” we’d like to pay tribute to these beers.
