Mocking beer styles to their faces is not our standard modus operandi, but when Leeds brewery Northern Monk came to the Czech Republic, there was virtually no other option. After all, it is Northern Monk that started the Czech mini-culture of dry-hopped kölsch with its beer a few years ago, which is actually a kind of beer-stylistic joke.

In January we held the very first iteration of the Winter Affair international beer festival, where we invited Europe’s top brewers and arranged collaboration batches with six of them. Now we’re introducing them all in short succession. Now we’re introducing them all in short succession. The looks on the faces of the brewers from Northern Monk Brewery when we told them how their random 2019 beer unleashed a chain of events that led to a facebook group with 2000 followers and this style being brewed successively by several different breweries in our country were simply priceless. And what was the joke? The Kölsch beer style has a very subtle characteristic that sets it apart from other German styles. But when you take that delicate character and throw bags of American hops into it, it sort of… sort of disappears. It’s kind of a beer style oxymoron and a beautiful illustration of weird brewing humor.
